Our First Year
It all started during the year of 1991 in November , when James Sowerby (member of Shildon R & AC), Tony Hindmarsh and Andrew Laybourn (unattached) trained together pounding the streets of Evenwood. James whom constantly nagged both Andy and Tony to join a running club, came up with a sarcastic comment about forming a club in Evenwood, this comment had planted the seed of thought and for the rest of their training session the idea was discussed. They estimated that there was a number of runners living in the area that did not belong to a club. With that in mind the three of them placed advertisements in local papers, shops, factories and generally spread the word by mouth that a meeting would take place in the Travellers Rest Public House on Thursday 30th January 19:00 hrs 1992 to discuss the viability of a new running club forming, the room was kindly provided by Peggy Fully the Landlady |

The meeting was chaired by a very nervous, James. Ideas where passed around about the name, colours and costs of the club and most importantly the very first training session, Sunday the 2nd February both meeting and training session were well attended. The Travellers Rest had now become the official headquarters.
The club colours were influenced by a local historian (Kevin Richardson) who informed us that the village colours are green and white. So after consideration is was decided at a meeting on the 16th February the strip would be emerald green and white vests with black shorts, this meeting also acknowledged the name of the club to be "Evenwood Road Runners" followed by nominations of committee members, fees and constitution rules for the club. During this period the club sought affiliation to the recently amalgamated North of England Athletic Association.
In December a vote was cast to use the logo that depicted the Coke Ovens, as most people in the area could associate them with Evenwood. The logo was designed by Darren Fairclough after being given a photo of the Ovens by Peggy Fuller (Landlady of the Travellers Rest). This was in favour over the stag logo designed by James Sowerby
In the the last 15 years we moved HQ to the Sports and Social club which then shut down and once again relocated back to the Travellers Rest.
