Three months on, the
youngsters were eager for more training so a further
training session on a Saturday afternoon, meeting on the
green outside the school at 13:00 became a regular
fixture. The talented youngsters at that time were,
Ben Ord, Tony Ord Nathan Nicholson, Sarah Douthwaite, Helen
and Gemma Barlow, Helen and Graham Archbold, Joel Shaw,
Shawn Brand, Patrick Stephenson and finally the youngest
runner my daughter Demi Douthwaite (pictured right) aged 3
escorted by my wife Donna. Each week no matter what the
weather there was always a good turnout this included some
members of the adult section of the club lending a
hand.
Winter Months
As winter crept in, it became difficult to keep the juniors warm
and dry before and after the training sessions, this led me into
contacting my local councilors whom got me in touch with a Mr. &
Mrs. Prince. Mr. & Mrs. Prince came up with the goods by
allowing the juniors to use the Evenwood and Ramshaw Community Center
and so training was set to 13:00 - 14:00 on a Saturday. Current
Meeting times are bottom of the page.
The first event was the Great North Run which produced
good efforts from all the children whilst sporting their new donated
green with buttercup print T shirts.
Season 2000
The new season (2000)starts
with new sweatshirts and waterproof jackets followed
by the Green and white running vests. A hardcore of
juniors are now established with others children coming
along for trials ( to see if they like it) a good turnout
had 32 children whilst a bad turnout is only six.
The races that the Juniors section completed in were the
South Shields 1 mile dash, Durham 3 mile,
Barnard Castle 4 Mile, Thirsk 3 Mile, Aycliffe 2 mile,
Darlington 2k, Hamsterly 3 Mile and took away the best part
of the prizes at the Dalton Dash 3 mile whilst finally
finishing off the year with the Junior Great North Run.
For the year 2000 all
of the Junior section were entered into the Teesdale Sports
award for their individual achievement and also for their
teamwork. Evenwood Junior Road Runner Joel Shaw won the
young achiever of the year award, Joel tries all sports at
school and gives his best and never gives up. Each
member of the juniors receives a certificate for
individual and team work.
Season 2001
This year the children have placed into three groups,
each group have one main aim and that it to get around the
course with a great sense of pride and achievement. The
first race of the season was in Consett on a freezing cold
morning however the juniors did themselves proud. Events for
the year were looking decidedly dodgy due to the foot and
mouth disease, but the team managed to compete in the Leeds
race followed by Thirsk and then Aycliffe.
