Housing
Developments in West Auckland and St Helens
West Auckland and and St Helens Auckland over recent
years has seen a house building boom. New houses in the area started
in approx 1993 with the building of Challener Way in St Helens by
Mccleans homes. This was followed by
Harron Homes in West Auckland
(on the Leech Estate) and Broseley Homes in St Helens (on the Wades
builders merchants land). Broseley found it so successful they have
continued to build on old hall farm and in the future on top of the
recently bulldozed derelict Trax Motel and Night Club, which
looks on to the main route through St Helens (A688). At the time of
building the first Broseley site named Mayfield Walk, new houses
were being added to Manor rd by Lexington Payne Homes, they also created the old hall farm
road, which Broseley have added to.
Whilst this was happening lots of work was being
done in St Helens, as part of the regeneration of the area. Such as
demolition of unsuitable housing on both old and newer council
estates. Houses on Tintern Road were demolished behind leazes lane
creating a much bigger green overlooking Fountain Square. Houses on
around central drive have been knocked down and are now the site of
a new housing estate West Bury Villas by
Dunelm Castle Homes.
The former land occupied by the scrap yard and old
bus depot (lockies if anyone remembers them just off leazes lane) is
now home to many, the developers their are Bryant Homes. Further up leazes lane
George Wimpy also created new housing.
Commercial land is available, St Helens is getting a Lidl Store on the site of former Elliot's Garage, opposite this is
an enormous patch of land awaiting development, Bishop Auckland
Football club have an interest in this. Over the last year interest
was mooted about a cinema and bowling alley, however i believe this
has fizzled out with the redevelopment of Bishop Auckland town
centre. But I am led to believe that B & Q are still interested in a
mini warehouse outlet.
