Luckily for Carol she is married again to a lovely guy and now lives in Wales. Don't think about the bad times in County Durham Carol

Comments: Just been looking at the site, and it's a very good imformative site. The item regarding Mary Ann Cotton was very interesting, as my Aunt who is now 92 and born at Bildershaw Bank, very often talked about her. In addition to my aunt 4 other members of the family together with their two parents, journeyed south during the slump of the thirties, to Kettering, Northants. Where they all settled in the town, one being my father. there are only 2 sister's left now, one as mentioned above is 92, the other is 81. I am compiling the family tree, and would welcome anyone or decendents from families who remembered the William Watson and the Hopps family from Brussleton to contact me.

Comments: Is there a chance you could set up a wi fi net in west auckland as we probably will never get broad band. You could charge £5 to £10per subscriber and get a good return perhaps you could post something so that people could register an interest and say how much they would be prepared to pay. I read recently that another small village had done just that and it was a huge success

Excellent site, Darren. Found the site on Google. I lved in Mary Ann's
house some 10 years ago on my own after it was renovated and I can tell
you it was definitely creepy at times! Many a night I went to bed with
a light on! Moved back to Front St. 'bout 4 years ago - still a great
place to live (and drink so long as the Club keeps charging 1.30 a pint
    for Ayingerbrau).

    Keep up the good work.

    Tony.

I lived in West Auckland from 1943(Born) to 1960 when I joined the RN
but still called it home until I emegrated to Canada in 1970. You have

Greetings once again Darren from West Auckland, Down Under ! My initial
posting to this GB was in December last and contained information re 2
cousins of mine from Bishop whom I hadn't seen since May 1951. I am very
happy to inform you that through your site and excellent effort on the
part of Messrs Joseph -&- Tony Dolan over there, I have been able to link
up again with these two lasses. What a pleasure it has all been and to
merely say I'm grateful is a gross understatement ! My cousins and I
are now in email contact and I must say similar contact with Joe has
also been very pleasureable. Also I'm thankful to Stan Howe for contact
he made. He'd played football with a Robinson lad way back in the '40's
and was I he ? No...but it's nice to think I could have been ! The
other gent ?, I thank you too. To you Darren for providing the vehicle
    for our endeavours...much gratitude !
From West Auckland - New Zealand, my Very Best Wishes.

    Hi Darren,
Excellent website, I was born and raised in West Auckland in Oakley
Street and 37 Front Street with my brother Les who now lives in Low
Etherley, my mum lives in Melrose Drive, St. Helens Auckland. My
daughter and ex-wife live two doors away and were living in River Walk
at the time of the flood. I went to Barnard Castle Grammar from 1960-65,
and my best pal John Bayles still lives in what used to be Front Street
but I think is now East Green. I live and work in Dundee, Scotland but
am in West at least once a fortnight and can normally be found in the
Blacksmiths Arms (The best pub that side of Hadrains Wall) on either a
Tuesday or Thursday, if anyone who knows me is still in the area.
Once again a brilliant site and nice to see West showing the way again.

    Hi Darren,

very good site. I've just discovered that my great, great grandfather,
George Bowron was a shoemaker at West Auckland sometime around the
1850's. His wife was Elizabeth and they had at least one son, James who
was a colliery worker. I would be interested to hear from anyone who
may have any info on the family. Also, does anyone know where the
    shoemakers' shop may have been.

    Many regards, Keith

    Hello,

I was pointed to this site by Neil Robinson, who reacted on my site.
You have a very nice site with good pictures.
It was very interesting to have a look at West Auckland New Zealand, I
was surprised to see some similarities with the Netherlands.
I was surprised to see the story about the flooding, on my site there
is also a piece about flooding, however here ist is controlled flooding
outside the dikes, not in the houses.

    With friendly greetings,

    Hugo Ouwerkerk

Hi again Darren. Greetings from West Auckland, New Zealand. I was here
back on Dec. 5th '01. Your site is as good as ever. Tons of interest,
so keep it up bonny lad ! Found a message on the board from a person in
Holland seeking a family in New Zealand. They (in Holland) got your
Auckland mixed up with this one but "it worked" 'cos I found 2 phone

Just found your site. Great stuff! Good to see folks like yourself
    publicising our historic old places.

I was born in Bishop Auckland over 76 years ago but now reside in
Virginia, USA - about 50 miles south of Washington DC.

I am interested in learning about an inrush of water in the 1960's at a
small mine in the area of West Auckland, Cockfield, Evenwood. Nobody was
hurt in the incident as far as I know but I heard that the Surveyor who
was responsible for the mine plans had his surveyor's certificate
revoked after an enquiry. Please contact me if you have any information
    on this.

My great great grandfarther was David Thomas who played for West
Auckland FC in 1909 when the Thomas Lipton cup was won. Please contact
me if you have any information on David or the team.

Hello Darren. I was born in West Auckland 71 years ago. All these years
on I am still a resident of West Auckland. There is however one 'small'
difference. This W A is over 12000 miles from my birthplace. This is the
New Zealand one where I have lived for 30 years, prior to which I lived
in Perth, West Australia for 20 years. What a delight to find your site
today when I really came on to find our local weather. I congratulate
you on an excellent miscellany of interesting items. I'm 'knocked out'
to think little old West Auckland Co. Durham has its own website. Good
for you ! I have 2 cousins living, or were 30 years ago, in Bishop.
Margaret -&- Maureen Shuttleworth whom I have not seen since they saw me
off from Bishop Railway station 50 years ago last April. I'd dearly
love to know where -&- how they are, all this time later. They could be
anywhere of course. Like me they could have wandered. Perhaps not !
Does anyone know of them ? Their Father,my Uncle Alf worked at Boots
    the Chemist

Our recent defeats against West Club (1-6) and Prince of Wales (1-5)

This is Andy Parry from Aycliffe, now living in Bristol. I played
football for the mighty West in the Northern league, I also played for
the Juniors under my favourite bloke of all time MICHEAL GRADY, my last
game was against Beddlington Terriers. The manager back then was Alan
Gates who I have'nt seen since that day. I do, however, know the
current manager Alan Oliver who I played under for Aycliffe workingmens
club, another top bloke. I would like to say hello to all the lads at
Tindale club where I also used to play. Its good to see this website,
it brings back loads of the best memorys. Some of the best people in
the world come from West, Good Luck to the football team, I hope to
come ad watch a game soon.

to speak. My roots are deeply planted in the north and this site feels
    like home.

I have just spent four days in West Auckland, as my Grandfather
Christopher (Kit) clark was born there. and then moved on to Leeholme.
I stopped at the Wheatside Hotel and what a very pleasant Hotel this is.
the views from the bedrooms at night or in the morning are out of this
world. I shall be going back again on a number of visits as my Family
all come from Bishop Aucland and surrounding area. If you ever have a
place on your website for places to stay for visitors I would definatley
    reccomend the Wheatside Hotle.
    Regards Laurence

I'm a 'Bishop lad'(well, Auckland Park)- now living in Sheffield - just
like to congratulate you on your brilliant site and I look forward to
    regular visits and updates.

PS - It would be nice to hear from anyone who lived in the Auckland
Park, Gurney Valley, Coundon Grange area in the last 50 - 60 years.

I have lived in West Auckland for the past 31 years and am probably
considered a "wrinkly" by most of your correspondents. However,I have
just discovered your web site and think it is excellent - it is never
    to late to learn.
    Keep up the good work.
    Best wishes

The site is up to its usual high standard. Just dropped by to say
Shildon is holding a gathering of the Clans the last week in August,
and we need all the publicity we can get. Keep up the good work

A belated congratulations to West Auckland on winning the first World
Cup. As the man said, what have West Auckland got, "bloody iron."
Enough iron and spirit to take on the World and win, twice.

    Well done World Champions.

It has been very interesting to visit your website from here in
Launceston Tasmania Australia. Our particular interest was regarding the
flood as we were in the area until the morning of the 3rd June. Our
travel arrangements took us South but we were made aware of the
situation the next morning by our niece and partner who live at
Toadpool and narrowly missed a tragic experience.Congratulations on a
very informative site,I will certainly visit
    periodically.

Bob "droll" Moore was my great grandfather and my grandad Joseph Moore
told me many stories about him and West Auckland. My grandparents Joe
and Maggie left the village in the 30's and settled in South Yorkshire
I beleive I have relatives still in the area. I can be contacted by
    email.

    Hi!

I've finally approached the West-Auckland web site, i have seen the
    flood pictures there pretty serious...

To be honest my house was just as bad I live in West-Auckland too, in
Hummerbeck, my house is at the bottom of the bank. The water level in
our house was up to 5ft deep.

    Thanks for the message Grow!
I have looked at the flood pictures and find it shocking that there
were no news reports made in West Auckland when there were so many
    homes damaged.

Great site. Cheers for adding my link, I've returned the compliment on
    my Darlo FC site.

I have no idea how to convince the non-believers that West really did
win the World Cup twice, but our sis had her photo taken in the paper
with the replica when they made one after the original one got pinched
    by someone from Cockfield!

    Up the Quakers!

    Dear W.A.W.

Check out your site for spelling mistakes e.g. "to" should be "too" and
Valentine's Day etc. What will people think about educational standards
in the wake of the Tories and after 3 years of wonderful New Labour?

Best wishes and I do like the site!
