What’s the Village Centre About?

In January 2001 the Millennium Festival Organization donated a sum of money in a bid to help convert the old library into a village centre. A steering group had been formed which led to the centre opening during the last year’s summer. Since then various fundraising activities have ensued to raise money for its cause and once again through various partnerships it is open once again.  As a reminder please find below the original reasons and ideas for having a village drop in centre.

  1. A meeting and information resource for the whole community....
  2. Bringing PEOPLE together to work in the interests of our community.
  3. INCREASING involvement.... Involve more people in local activities
  4. Promoting ACCESSIBILITY... .To encourage activities which are inclusive to everyone who wishes to participate
  5. Being well ORGANISED... .To encourage good organisation and good planning of community activities to help maximise benefits

THE VILLAGE CENTRE could provide:

·        A drop-in for informal meetings for local people and visitors

·        A reading room and lending library

·         Information point for - public services (provided by WVDC)

·        Local services and businesses

·        Tourist and visitor information

·        Vocational training and employment opportunities

·        Surgeries with - local councillors and MP

·        Council officers and advisors

·        Police — neighbourhood watch

·        Vocational training and employment advice for local services and business

·        Local Heritage Centre — display of historical information and artifacts, talks and get-togethers for people interested in, or researching local history, and as an outside classroom for local school children

·        Internet Link

·        Workshop and Storage Space — for community activities e.g. Village Fayre, Christmas Lights, children’s holiday play schemes

Village Centre is now open once again

Open Wednesday and Thursday mornings, 10.00am to 11.30am.  February may see Monday morning opening

As always this centre needs volunteers. Ideally we are looking for people who have two to three hours to spare, who can offer the following services.

  • Offer coffee/Tea to Visitors

  • Take messages for councillors, police etc

  • Hand out local leaflets, local info to tourists

  • Open and close the centre before and after other users/events

we would welcome any offer of help even one morning a month.

  • A book exchange is now in operation

Summer Holidays

For kids even mums and dads pop into the centre we have trained volunteers such as football coaches, rugby coaches, arts and crafts trainers and crèche workers to help organise an events, lesson etc.

The experience corps works in association with the West Auckland village partnership.  It is aimed at recruiting people over 50 who are willing to donate their skill and experience for the benefit of their local community. Everybody has something to offer. For more Info click the link.
